What Is A Good Eczema Scalp Treatment?

When you think of eczema, you normally think of it being on the face, arms, chest, or back, but one of the most common forms is eczema of the scalp. The symptoms are the same: dry skin, itching, redness, and sometimes lumps or blisters. Eczema scalp skin flakes are often mistaken for dandruff.

Treatment options are essentially the same for the scalp as for other parts of the body. You can use cortisone creams or pills and they will relieve the itching fairly quickly, but they have some undesirable side effects. Long term use can compromise your immune system and thin your skin.

As with any dry, irritated skin, it’s very important to keep you scalp properly moisturized. Avoid anything that will dry out your scalp. This means avoiding shampoos with soap. Soap dries your skin, and that’s the last thing you need when you’re trying to clear up your eczema. Don’t use anything with sodium laurel sulfate or parabens. Use fruit-based, oil-based, or all-natural shampoos, preferably unscented, to irritate your scalp as little as possible. Some good options include shampoos with yucca or coconut-based surfactants.

You can warm some olive oil and apply it to your scalp. Use only a high grade oil, preferably organic to ensure that it is free of any additives that might irritate your scalp. If possible, leave the oil on overnight for best results. Some people have had good results using a warm coconut oil and turmeric mixture to moisturize the scalp. If you can’t leave these preparations on overnight, you can use a face steamer to further warm your scalp, opening the pores and allowing the oils to penetrate deeper into the skin. Try to leave the mixture on at least for a couple of hours.

Allergies are known to cause eczema, as are sensitivities to chemicals and toxins in our environment. If you have allergies to certain foods, try to eliminate them from your diet. Eating an organic diet will ensure that you aren’t getting small doses of pesticides or fungicides found on non-organic fruit and produce or hormones found in non-organically raised beef, pork, and poultry. Try to replace your “mainstream” household cleaning and laundry products with more natural products containing plant-based formulations.

As you can see, there is no one best eczema scalp treatment. By
